What is a passphrase

A passphrase is an optional extra secret on top of the seed phrase. The same seed and a different passphrase open a different set of addresses. Terius cannot recover a forgotten passphrase.

It is not the password

The password encrypts the file on this device. The passphrase chooses which wallet inside that file you open. Leave it empty and you open the main wallet.

If someone learns the seed phrase and does not know the passphrase, they open the main wallet, not the one behind the extra word.

An empty field is the main wallet

  1. Password

    On this device

Opens the encrypted file. It is not the seed phrase.

  2. Seed phrase

    On paper

12 or 24 words. Restores the wallet anywhere.

  3. Passphrase

    Only in your head

Optional. The same phrase plus another word is another wallet.

Leave the passphrase empty and Terius opens the main wallet. Type a passphrase and it opens the wallet that belongs to that word.

A forgotten passphrase stays forgotten

The passphrase is not stored on the device and not on a server. If you forget it, that wallet cannot be opened.

The phrase alone is a different wallet

Someone who has the seed phrase but not the passphrase opens the main wallet, not the hidden one. That is the point of the extra word. Terius cannot look it up.
